| I've always like designing with text and I wanted to show how easy it is to create a scattered text effect by converting a piece of text into a custom brush.
- First, I typed in word to use as a brush. Then I went up to Edit > Define Brush Preset and gave it a name. I repeated this process two more times.
- Next, I changed the brush settings for my first custom brush. I increased spacing, then increased size jitter, enabled scattering and finally enabled opacity jitter.
- Then, on a new layer, I applied my "text" brush to the left side of the image.
- I repeated this process for the other two "text" brushes I made.
- I then duplicated each layer to add even more scattered text, merged the layers and lowered the opacity.
- Next, it was time to choose a custom shape to use as sort of a screen. I extended said shape by adding a large white box to the right of it and merged the two layers. I then added a faint drop shadow with a distance of 0, an opacity of around 35, and a size of about 9.
- Then I dropped in a photo and gave it a 1 point stroke.
- With the white "screen" graphic layer selected, I CTRL clicked (that would be Command on a Mac) on the bw image thumbnail to load it as a selection. Then I went to View > Modify > Expand and expanded the selection by 10 pixels. After that I simply pressed delete to punch out that shape on the white screen layer. Since that layer had a drop shadow layer style applied to it, the drop shadow became visible in the new opening creating a recessed picture effect.
- That was pretty much it for the basic template.
Later on some text could be added and by making the graphic a smart object, you could simply drop in another photo at a later date when you wished to update your ad or what-have-you.
