Could you please tell me what shortcut you use to fill the background with the color?

I used the eyedropper tool to sample the color from the image (shortcut - I), then pressed ALT Backspace to fill the background layer with the sampled color (which was my foreground color swatch). On a Mac, it would be Option Delete to fill with the foreground color.
