After clicking the add layer mask button (third button on the left at the bottom of the layers palette), I selected the gradient tool by pressing "G". My gradient was already set up as black to transparent, but to change it you would click on the gradient swatch in the upper left of the screen. You would then choose foreground to transparent, making sure that black was your current foreground color (pressing "D" will make black the foreground color). Then on the layer mask drag the gradient in the direction that you want to obscure and reveal. Since the gradient starts with black, you would start with black on the bottom and drag up. Black on the layer mask will hide that part of the layer. You might want to check out our layer and layer mask videos and the Photoshop Screen shot project (specifically the gradient tool) as they'll surely help you out.
